Conerly Family History

Owen Conerly Sr.(1777-1848) Luke W. Conerly's Grandfather
Born 8-27-1777 and came to Pike County in 1822 from Duplin County, North Carolina. Owen Conerly Sr. was married to Widow Mary Wilkinson Russell, daughter of William & Elizabeth Jackson Wilkinson, born 12-18-1791 married on January 14, 1808 in the town of Fayetteville, North Carolina in Cumberland County. Mary Wilkinson Russell Conerly died 8-24-1860 at Holmesville, MS.  Owen Conerly Sr. died 12-18-1848 and possibly buried at China Grove or Holmesville, MS.  When they came to Mississippi Owen purchased all of Ralph Stovall's property at China Grove.  The China Grove Methodist Church was organized by Owen and his brother Rev. Luke Conerly and the current Church and Cemetery at China Grove was built on his land.    Owen Conerly Sr., kept his mill in operation attended by his son, Owen Jr., until his death.  All of Owen Sr's property was sold to N.B. Raiford the preacher at China Grove. 


Owen Conerly Jr. (1817-1860) Luke W. Conerly's Father
Born 9/30/1817 and died 6/9/1860 and possibly buried [in unmarked grave] at Holmesville, MS Pike County. He married Ann Louisa Stephens born in 1822, married in 1838 and the date of her death is unknown and she is possibly buried [unmarked] in Summit, MS Pike County. Owen Conerly Jr, in 1846 raised a military company of the young men of Magees Creek for service in the Mexican War then being prosecuted by the United States Government. He was chosen as Captain but before the company could reach the army the war closed and the volunteers disbanded.  After his fathers death in 1848 Owen Jr purchased 160 acres 1 mile north of the China Grove Church on Magee's Creek and built several mill's including a lumber, grist mill and cotton gin.  Owen Conerly Jr. and Ann Louisa Stephens had Chauncey Porter, Luke Ward, Mary Ann, Robert J, Buxton Ryves, Owen, Thomas, Samuel L, Edward S, (possibly Lula and Cecelia)

Chauncey Porter Conerly (1839-1903)
Was a doctor married to Margaret McCullough. He served in the Civil War as a hospital steward and assistant surgeon as Sgt in Company E, 33rd Regiment MS Infantry, The Holmesville Guards. He also served as the Chief Clerk of Surgeon General- P F Whitehead of Loring's Division. He died in 1903 in Lincoln County MS and is buried in the Winston McCollough Cemetery near Ruth, Lincoln County, MS. His photograph is shown on page 202 of the Pike County book.

Luke Ward Conerly (1841-1922)
Served as a 5th Sgt, Company E, 16th MS Infantry, Quitman Guards which later became a part of the Army of Northern Virginia. He married his first wife Emma Eoline Quin born in 1852, married 1867 and there is no record of her death or burial. He married his second wife Ida Mae Farmer, her photo is on page 348. Ida M Farmer was born January 3, 1870 and died September 14, 1913 and was the daughter of Zackary T Farmer and Mary J Byars. She is buried in the Mississippi City Cemetery in Gulfport MS next to Luke Ward Conerly. She is buried with two infants. They married May 4th, 1909. His third wife was Georgia McNair Ellis Conerly and they were married April 17, 1915. Luke Ward Conerly entered the Beauvoir Old Soldiers Home June 10, 1921 and died there March 9, 1922. He is buried next to his 2nd wife Ida Mae Farmer in the Mississippi City Cemetery in Gulfport, MS at his request. His 3rd wife Georgia McNair Conerly was living after his death.

Mary Ann Conerly (1843-   )
Married Dr. W.J. Lampkin and lived at 260 East Florence St., Gloster MS and the home has been beautifully restored.  Dr. Lamkin was the first doctor in Gloster.  Her photo is on page 138 of the Pike County book.


Robert J. Conerly (1845-1851)


Buxton Ryves Conerly (1848-1913)
On February 10th 1864, a few days past his 17th birthday, he enlisted as a Pvt. with the 16th Mississippi Infantry Company E at Orange Court House, VA.  Of 250 soldiers he was one of only 30 who survived the assault at Fort Gregg by five thousand Federal Troops of the 3rd Brigade of the 24th Army Corps. He later moved to Marshall, TX and married Myra Jane Collins (1860-1939) They lived in a stately white home facing the post office which is no longer standing. They had a son Thomas Preston Conerly(1878-1920) and a daughter Mabel. Thomas Preston Conerly married Elizabeth Davis(1878-1975) and had 5 children. Davis Edward (1903-1965), Christine, Ruth(1908-1994), Preston Jr.(1911-1989), Myra Jane(still living as of May 2010). Ruth Conerly became a famous artist  and her painting of Col. Travis is hanging in the Alamo.  Her daughter Sharon E. Wolf, M.D. authored the book "A Girl from Texas" about her mothers Ruth Conerly's life.  Buxton's great granddaughter Sharon now lives in Costa Rica.   Buxton Conerly's photo is on page 230 including his account of the Battle of Fort Gregg April 2nd, 1865.
